도시 조경은 자연과 닮은 공간으로의 욕망으로부터 시작된다고 생각된다. 나무 무늬목 장판, 조화 장식, 자연석 시트 등은 그렇게 우리 방안에 들어와 있다. 나는 그러한 의미에서 가장 인위적 공간 중 하나가 수영장이 아닐까 한다. 조경 잡지에는 자연과 함께 멋진 수영장이 딸린 집을 소개하고, 호텔 또는 고급 멘션에서는 대자연 속 천혜의 수영장이라는 표현을 빈번히 사용하기도 한다. 여가를 즐기기 위한 조경적 인공물이, 중산층으로 태어난 나에게 부의 척도가 되기도 하였다. 나는 물이 아닌 사용이 끝난 건축물을 허물고, 폐허가 된 장소로부터 태어난 파편들을 재가공하여 그 안을 채워 넣었다. 그렇게 빛 바랜 흔적이 가득한 폐허의 풍경은 낯선 수영장과 함께 등장한다.

Urban landscaping, I believe, originates from the desire for spaces resembling nature. Elements like wood-patterned flooring, harmonious decorations, and natural stone sheets have found their way into our living spaces. In that sense, one of the most artificial spaces might be a swimming pool. Landscaping magazines often feature houses with beautiful swimming pools alongside nature, and expressions like "a pool in the lap of nature" are frequently used in hotels or luxury mansions. Artificial elements designed for leisure have, for someone born into the middle class like me, served as a measure of wealth. I demolished buildings that were no longer in use, repurposed fragments born from ruined places, and filled them inside. Thus, a landscape filled with faded traces emerges alongside an unfamiliar swimming pool.

현장은 불법 건축물 자리로 성북동에서 10여 년 운영되던 닭도리탕집 ‘성 너머 집’이 유네스코 공원화 사업으로 사라진 자리이다.

The site was once occupied by an illegal construction, where a chicken stew restaurant called 'Beyond the Castle' had operated for over 10 years in Seongbuk-dong. It disappeared due to the UNESCO park development project.
