2018년 방문한 제주는 예민 난민 문제로 소란스러웠다. 문화적 유사성이 낮은 그들이 여기로 오기까지를 다루기 위해 많은 매체들은 앞 다퉈 인터뷰와 뉴스를 보도했다. 내가 목격한 현장은 심사장 앞에 줄지어 노숙을 하며 씻지도 못한 채, 그들이 반복해서 말하는 ‘행복’이라는 단어가 귓가에 맴돈다.

작업 <불 꺼진 행복>은 개인의 내적 만족 상태나 이상적 미래를 뜻하는 행복이라는 단어가 특정한 이념, 생활방식, 욕망, 계급, 미래를 생산하면서 광고와 같은 권력의 장치로 사용되고 있음을 표현한 것이다. 행복이라는 간판의 사인과 함께 나부끼는 바닥의 응원술은 행복의 한 획이 꺼지면서 춤을 멈춘다. 이 작업에서 행복-항복 간의 반복적인 교차가 행복=항복이 되는 순간 우리는 희망과 이상, 미래의 꿈이 권력에의 복종, 좌절, 무기력으로 대체 되는 씁쓸한 현실을 마주하게 된다.

In 2018, Jeju, which I visited, was tumultuous due to the sensitive refugee issue. Many media outlets covered interviews and news reports to address the journey of those with low cultural similarity coming here. The scene I witnessed echoed with the word 'happiness' repeated by those lined up in front of the immigration office, homeless and unwashed.

The artwork "Extinct Happiness" expresses how the word 'happiness,' signifying an individual's inner state of satisfaction or an ideal future, is used as a tool of power, akin to advertising, producing specific ideologies, lifestyles, desires, classes, and futures. As the stroke of happiness dims along with the signage, the cheerleading on the blurry floor ceases its dance. In this work, the repetitive intersection between happiness and surrender leads to the moment where happiness equals surrender, confronting us with the bitter reality where hope, ideals, and dreams of the future are replaced by obedience to power, frustration, and inertia.
