In 1972, North and South Korea attempted their first dialogue since the division through the "July 4th North-South Joint Statement," shuttling between Seoul and Pyongyang. At that time, the key route for high-ranking officials moving back and forth was the 'Unification Road.' Considering the historical context, the surroundings of Unification Road would have symbolized the 'present' of the nation as viewed by the high-ranking officials. The vicinity of Unification Road continues to exhibit a neglected appearance in terms of architecture, economy, and culture. The authorities at that time prioritized the development of areas where high-ranking officials from North and South Korea lingered. In the late 1970s, a significant amount of 5.7 billion won was invested to complete the Unification Road, connecting Gyeongin Expressway and Haengju Bridge in just one year. Simultaneously, they demolished underdeveloped rural areas and constructed housing complexes displaying collective ideologies of political idealism (such as Samsong Government Employee Housing and Eunpyeong Hanyang Housing). However, these housing areas with a unique historical context are gradually disappearing amid the current trend of new city development. The "Research on Government Employee Housing Complex" aims to photographically document and visualize the residential structures as political evidence remaining around Unification Road.
